Antonio Viva is an absolute institution and has been working in his shop „L’Arte del Sandalo Caprese“ at Via Giuseppe Orlandi 75 in the centre of Anacapri since 1958. His fame reached as far as Hollywood, making his sandals a must-have for Jackie O and Sofia Loren. The ancient art of sandal making dates back to the Greeks. The pragmatic Romans designed sandals that were sturdy enough for military expeditions. This „modern“ version apparently caught on with Emperor Tiberius, the first emperor to wear the hard sole that later became known as the „sandalium“ and then the sandal. Since he made Capri his summer residence, the island is associated with the invention of the new footwear. And Antonio Viva, as his name suggests, keeps the tradition alive. One is overwhelmed by the variety of colours with a multitude of precious stones and coloured straps that he offers in his shop. A wonderful souvenir to take home.
