When Bar Tartine opened in 2005, it was the great sequel to the success story of pastry chef Elisabeth Prueitt and baker Chad Robertson, the owner-couple of Tartine Bakery. Their small and mighty restaurant in the hot Mission District is a popular meeting place for friends, regulars and lovers of Californian-European cuisine with a Hungarian touch – made from the best regional ingredients of the season. A loaf of freshly baked sourdough bread with salted butter hits the spot and makes the perfect prelude to everything that is to follow… Try exceptional combinations of pickles with asparagus and green strawberries, or parsley root and black radish, garden salads with beetroot and blue cheese, paprika chicken with buckwheat noodles, or the Tartine Burger made with Brioche, served on a wooden board, to name just a few. Accompanying selected wines from Californian vintner friends consummate the marriage of local produce and great flavour. Such choice comes with an ever-present temptation to order 1 or 2 dishes too many! A blunder sorely regretted upon afterwards seeing the dessert menu, which spoils for choice, offering Bohemian Apple Cake with cider glaze or Turkish coffee – Kardamom ice cream with Four Barrel Espresso – and pistachio cookie, for example. Dark wood, hand-picked paintings on the walls and a bar that offers a direct peek into the kitchen create a cozy atmosphere and make Bar Tartine the perfect place for a never-ending evening with friends.
