From outside this Osteria on Beverly Boulevard has a classic, simple look, but doesn’t appear to be anything special. This only makes Gino Angelini’s kitchen even more impressive upon discovery. After immigrating from Rimini many years ago, he opened his own restaurant serving authentic Italian dishes, due as much to plain stubbornness as old, passed-down recipes. On offer, for example, is the green lasagne “Omaggio Nonna Elvira”, made with beef and veal ragu in homage to Gino’s grandmother Elvira. Or take the Bombolotti all’Amatriciana: pasta with tomatoes and Guanciale (unsmoked Italian bacon from the pig’s cheeks). Plenty of regulars make an appearance on Sundays for the Saltimbocca alla Romana, while others prefer to be surprised by the daily specials, or simply settle for a fresh-baked pizza.
