Symbol of the 1958 World’s Fair, the Atomium remains an architectural milestone. Fully restored, André Waterkeyn’s shining, interconnected spheres represent an iron crystal magnified to the 165-billionth degree. German lighting designer Ingo Maurer’s light show dazzles in the evening. During the day the Atomium offers spectacular views from the elevator, once the fastest in Europe and still impressive, and panoramic views from the restaurant located in the highest sphere. The Atomium is easy to reach by metro (stop: Heysel).
