San Clemente is Rome’s most fascinating sandwich. There is no other place that makes you experience the city’s history as lively as this. The building takes you on a journey through time over 1,200 years with three stops: Ancient times, fourth millennium and Byzantine period. The first layer of the building is an ancient Christian home where Christians met to celebrate the Holy Communion before the legalization of Christianity in 313. A church from the 4th century forms the middle layer. The third and final layer is the church Chiesa San Clemente. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century buy Pope Paschalis II, after the former building at the site was destroyed in the plundering of the Normans in 1084.
