For more than 50 years, the Beretta bakery has been making nuvola, a kind of brioche that, according to the saleswoman, melts in your mouth like butter. It is the speciality of the house and the dough really does have a particularly soft, fluffy consistency. The bakery is located in the old town of Como, just a few metres from the lake on Piazza Boldoni. When you enter the shop, you are immediately struck by a homely feeling. The smell of freshly baked bread is in the air and the waitresses with their berets and blue and white aprons are busily working behind the counter. The Beretta is popular with locals and tourists alike, so popular that on some days the queue stretches outside. But the wait is worth it. In addition to the nuvola, amaretti, doughnuts, tarte au citron, focaccia and pizza are tempting, as well as another speciality from the region – sourdough bread baked in the traditional way. The Beretta bakery is a great place to fill your picnic basket for an uncomplicated lunch on Lake Como or as a snack for a boat trip. If you prefer to eat on site, visit the café at Via Tentorio 20.
