To get here you will need to undertake a one hour ride and 10 minute walk through the countryside. You will be astonished by the 12m high concrete tower in the middle of the idyllic Eifel landscape. Only a delicate cross above the heavy triangular door of steel indicates that this is a holy place. Once inside, you will be speechless, with tree trunks positioned in an upward manner, as to create a tent shape, right in front of you. 300 sparkling lights flicker, which will inevitably remind you of the stars in our universe.
A spiritual place where one can connect their own mortal self with the infinite immortal universe. Despite or because of the darkness, things can be seen in perspective. Only from the top light can enter into the tower, and when it rains, it will rain inside. This is done intentionally, as in this place the 4 elements are centralized: fire, water, earth, air.
A local farmer, Mr. Scheidtweiler, wanted to donate a chapel in honour of Saint Nicholas of Flüe and spoke to the famous architect Peter Zumthor. His mother was also an admirer of “Brother Claus”, the patron saint of the Catholic Country Youth Movement. Zumthor agreed, conceptualized the idea and even helped building it – all without asking for a dime. The monolithic building, which was only built with materials out of the area, is spectacular in its simplicity and in the mean time attracts many tourists.
If you rather experience the magical vibes for yourself, it is best to come early in the morning. It might be a long trip, but if you weigh it off to the spiritual experience that awaits you here, it is really no matter to consider.
