The Café Central, which is the only Viennese coffee house in Western Austria, has been a place of encounter and hospitality for more than 133 years. A large, open room, with high ceilings, upward-stretching windows, walls decorated with stucco, a piano and a large chandelier – the architecture and furnishings make you feel as if you were travelling back to the beginning of the 19th century. Nevertheless, thanks to the sturdy, unpretentious wooden chairs and the angled benches, the café has something modern and casual about it, because you can retire and enjoy a café melange undisturbed behind your newspaper. Since 2015, by the way, the café is smoke-free, thereby fulfilling the wishes of its guests. Food includes classic old Austrian cuisine, much from their own agriculture and hunting as well as regional products. Piano concerts take place every Sunday from October to April. In addition, there is a large summer terrace and for rainy days an extensive range of newspapers and readings (approx. 65 current issues) to enjoy indoors. Oh yes, and the café is a Unesco cultural heritage – so there are plenty of reasons to stop by.
