A trip to Golden Gate Park is always worth it, not just for the weekend goings-on and the spectacular new aquarium, but especially for the De Young Museum. In 2005 Celebrated Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron inaugurated this clean, postmodern artwork whose façade is covered in perforated metal plates. Inside, the collections of American art from the 17th –20th century, Native American, African and Pacific Islander art are each one of a kind. Temporary exhibitions run the gamut from Yves Saint Laurent and Andy Warhol to historical Quilts and quilt-making. Even though the museum café offers little more than over-priced, pre-packaged sandwiches and the like, the De Young is worth a visit if only for the overhead lamps that resemble colored marble hanging from the ceiling and the garden where you can drink your latte macchiato in peace. At the top of the tower is a viewing platform offering a splendid panorama over the park.
