In 1914 the “Blaue Reiter” Franz Marc (1880-1916), one of the most important German expressionists, acquired a house near Kochel am See and worked on his last great paintings. Since 1986, the Franz Marc Museum there has been showing his work and juxtaposing it with painters of his time and the artists of the “Brücke”, presenting various aspects of the extensive collection in temporary exhibitions, including works by August Macke, Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Lyonel Feininger and Henri Matisse, as well as references to contemporary art.
