The Galerie Georg Kargl was the first to appear in the Shleifmühlgasse in 1998. Today the street corner belongs to one of the most renowned gallery districts in Vienna. In addition to solo exhibitions by artists such as Mark Dion (2001), Vera Frenkel (2003), and Clegg & Guttmann (2005), the gallery has curated thematic exhibitions, such as “From Above” (2004) or the group show coordinated by Thomas Locher, “Re-Production 2” (2003). Next door is the BOX, a separate exhibition space, which, with façade designed by American artist Richard Artschwager, acts as a permanent installation and inspires the surrounding public space.
