The farmhouse “Zum Stricker”, acquired by Julius Exter in Übersee-Feldwies am Chiemsee in 1902, was the artist’s residence and the location of his school of painting, which was famous throughout Europe. Today it houses a large collection of paintings by the famous painter, which are characterised by a vibrant blaze of colour. Among them are above all the famous landscape paintings Exters.
The painter was already called “the colour prince” by his artist friends. Whoever looks at his paintings knows why. Exter very quickly detached himself from the historical painting and symbolism of his contemporaries, he increasingly painted impressionistically and finally created an extensive late Expressionist work.
