To marvel at here are not only Greek, Etruscan and Roman treasures, but also the megalomania of oil mogul Jean Paul Getty. Because his house in the Pacific Palisades was too small, he had the Villa dei Papyri – which was buried in the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius – reconstructed true to the original on a hill in the Pacific. Statues, porticoes, waterfalls and box hedges surround you and you feel like you’ve been transported to ancient Italy in the middle of California. The Getty Villa is the predecessor of the Getty Center; the entry here is also free, only the parking spot – and that really is the only place to park – costs 15 dollars. Tickets must be reserved online or by telephone (001 310 440 7300).
