The Hanbey Shimokitazawa is a mega cool Izakaya like in a picture book. Upon entering, you are surprised by a tempting cloud of grilled chicken and freshly tapped beer (it’s more appetizing than it sounds), while the radio plays old-fashioned Japanese pop from 60 years ago. The walls are decorated with retro posters, little toy robots on shelves, and an Astroboy figure is not missing either. While most themed restaurants tend to feel forced, Hanbey manages to be authentic despite the decor flooded interior. It really feels like going back to the days of old Japan. In Tokyo there are many ways to eat cheaply, but often you only get what you pay for. The menu at the Hanbey fits the budget of a college student, but the quality of the food is a few notches above. Here you will find all the classic Izakaya dishes such as yakitori (grilled chicken), sashimi, fried potatoes, and even horse meat, which is often served with alcoholic drinks. Especially because of the cheap drinks many young Japanese people come here. They often cost as much here as at 7/11 or Lawson. The long opening hours (until 4.00 am) make the Izakaya a popular pit stop after a long night.
