High over Hollywood is enthroned Hollyhock House, completed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1921 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Driving up the hill, you feel like you’re approaching a Mayan temple. Compact and decorated with hollyhock ornaments and with only small windows, it shines grey-beige in the sun. Because Lloyd Wright was busy with the Hotel Imperial in Tokyo during construction, he left many of the decisions to his student Rudolph Schindler and his son. Originally the house was supposed to become the centre of the Barnsdall Art Park, but the construction costs were higher than planned and Barnsdall left it in 1927 to the city of Los Angeles. Today people can visit the house on weekends with a guided tour. As the available times can vary due to renovation works, you should call beforehand on (001) 323 64 46 26 9. A visit outside the opening times is worth it too, however, given the stunning location. The view over the city is so pretty that Los Angelinos make themselves comfortable on the surrounding meadows to enjoy it.
