The flower island is a privately run giant museum and adventure park. Here one has made the good Lake Constance climate one’s own and created subtropical gardens. Impressive is the arboretum, which shows more than 250 different tree species from all over the world – e.g. sequoias, cedars from the Atlas Mountains or Lebanon. In the centre of the island is the castle, which also houses a café. Mainau is also famous for having the second largest butterfly sanctuary in Germany with 120 different free-flying species of butterflies. You can take a boat from various towns around Lake Constance to Mainau Island – certainly the most beautiful way to get there. The island is open all year round from sunrise to sunset and costs admission.
