La Cave à Michel is a tiny hole in the wall where you immediately feel at home. This is mainly down to the owner Maxime, who doesn’t let anything put him off his stride. It’s a one-man show that works. The wine selection is huge, and if there is nothing among the open wines, Maxime simply opens a new bottle. There are also French-Spanish inspired tapas: pimientos de padrón, terrine and smoked herring – all prepared on a single hob. There are also fresh oysters, and although there are three on the menu, we get four so we don’t argue. The décor is as relaxed as the shop itself: charmingly mixed ceramics and rows of wine bottles in front of Portuguese azulejos. There are only stools at the bar for seating – that’s all you need. If you’re looking for an uncomplicated evening with really good wines and honest food, this is the place for you. Insider tip: Every few months, Michel organises legendary bingo events featuring oysters and raclette – don’t miss out.
