Surfing beginners are not advised to try their luck with the waves here. This legendary bay is famous also for the hot level of competition, and there is a tacit understanding that the surf is almost reserved for locals, or at least those who really know what they’re doing. From the early morning on, the many convertibles bearing boards are parked on the Pacific Coast Highway. One can observe older men changing from Neoprene to a business suit, alongside surfer students and ‘California girls’. They’re another reason so many photographers flock here on weekends, with camera and tripod in tow. The beach is strictly divided into surf and swim sections; wherever you position yourself, it’s fun to mix with the local community and, at the least, watch the surfers from the comfort of your beach towel.
