The Martin-Gropius Bau was opened in 1881 to house the royal collection of applied arts. Architects Walter Gropius and Heino Schmieden, both disciples of the famed Prussian Architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, detailed the magnificent building with beautiful mosaics and bas relieves in renaissance style. In 1981 the building reopened with a retrospective of Schinkels architectural oeuvre. Each year, in cooperation with international partner institutions, Martin-Gropius Bau puts on 15 shows focusing on fine art, photography and history. They are among the most interesting exhibitions in the city.
