The glass and steel construction by architects Katharina and Wilfrid Steib built in 1980 was the first museum that is exclusively dedicated to art from after the 1960s. Just like many other projects in the art-dedicated Basel, it was funded by patrons. The Christoph-Merian Foundation provided the property and the then 80-year old Hoffmann-La-Roche heir Maja Sacher financed the building. In April 2012, a new collection comprising pieces from the 1980s by Georg Baselitz, Günther Forg, Sherrie Levine and Fischli/Weiss was presented. The museum also hosts changing exhibitions and shows installations and video art.
