Every first Friday of the month, cultural life goes wild at Art Murmur in Oakland when you are more likely to hear delighted yelps than quiet murmuring in this hip neighborhood. Almost 20 galleries, each more interested in great art than big profits, have settled in the once seedy area. A visit to Creative Growth, a participant in Art Murmur, is of particular interest. Known well beyond the city limits, at Creative Growth disabled persons practice their art. The enormous, multi-colored factory space-studio is chock full of fantastic art. The studio also hosts film screenings and performances and is a favorite of actor Sean Penn.
