The monumental “Palais du Pape” (Pope’s Palace) was the residence of numerous popes in the 14th and 15th centuries and is today considered the largest and most important Gothic building in Europe. The Court of Honour, numerous artistically decorated rooms and the private chambers of the popes with wonderful frescoes by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti attract almost a million visitors every year. The Pope’s Palace also regularly hosts top-class concerts and exhibitions. Together with the old town of Avignon, the “Palais du Pape” is a world heritage site and one of the most visited monuments in France.
