It is Madrid’s largest and most beautiful park and the perfect place to escape from the hectic city. White stone statues of the Spanish kings and queens line the avenues in between the trees and bushes. In the middle of the park there is a small man-made lake, where you can rent paddle boats and relax on the water. On weekends, the whole of Madrid seems to be visiting the park and the avenue, with its fair-like atmosphere and colourful mix of promenaders, musicians and pedlars. But even then you’ll find some shady spots where you can enjoy your privacy. Be sure not to miss the Palacio de Cristal, an impressive glass palace. The Palacio de Velázquez also has interesting contemporary art exhibitions.
