High up on the Monsaraz mountain fortress, the rustic Sabores de Monsaraz tavern is one of the best places to immerse yourself in the local cuisine of the Alentejo. Dona Isabel has made a name for herself here for her infectious humour and brilliant cuisine. But not only the Iberian roast pork that melts in the mouth or the hearty bacalhau dourado – cod with egg and potatoes – are worth the many narrow alleys, also the view that reaches as far as Spain is unique. Dona Isabel’s legendary dessert buffet is a must, by the way. Take a serving of Sericaia (ice cream tarte) with sugared plums – heavenly!
