In 1797 nobody less than David Gilly, the teacher of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, built the castle Paretz for the later Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III and his wife Luise. A few years later Gilly took over the village and created an architectural synthesis of the arts of classicism. After years of neglect, Schloss Mitter was bought up by the state of Brandenburg in the 1990s, repaired and the royal apartment opened to the public for viewing. In the castle remise there is an exhibition of historical sleighs, carriages and sedan chairs. Today it is called Storchenhof Paretz because of the many storks that nest around and at the castle.
