Teatergrillen is an absolute institution in Stockholm. The historic restaurant opened in Östermalm in 1945 and has one of the oldest preserved restaurant interiors in the city. The interior was designed in 1968 by the stage photographer Yngve Gamlin on behalf of the famous chef Tore Wretman. Red velvet and theatre props dominate the décor, as well as details like brass-clad wine coolers made especially for the restaurant. Be sure to check out the toilets, where there is a unique painting on the floor by Roger Andersson, titled “Down on your Knees”. No wonder Teatergrillen is still a stomping ground for Stockholm’s media and cultural celebrities. Not only is it a great place for traditional dining, but it’s also a great place for people-watching.
