Lake Maggiore is a constant companion on a trip through Ticino. Whether from the top of a mountain ridge or strolling along the promenade of Locarno – it always glitters enticingly and brightly blue. There are numerous bathing spots along the lake, but the most beautiful way to explore it is, of course, from a boat. On sunny days, hundreds of sailors, families on pedal boats, kayakers and pensioners on excursion steamers are drawn out onto the lake. Every now and then, a yacht whose dimensions suggest George Clooney or other Hollywood stars cruises by. But with its 212.5 km2, which makes Lake Maggiore slightly larger than Hanover, it offers enough space for everyone. The lake is particularly beautiful and relaxing to explore by motorboat. In Switzerland, boats up to 8 hp are licence-free, in Italy even up to 40 hp. A recommendable boat rental is in Locarno/Muralto, of course right at the front of the lake. Here you can rent stand-up paddles, motor boats, jet skis and pedal boats. On warm days and especially at weekends, it is advisable to make a reservation.
