The enchanting Café 21 gramm in the historic chapel building at the edge of the St. Thomas cemetery is one of our new favourite places in the city.
The place seems, admittedly, a little absurd, because in former times corpses were prepared for their funeral in the rooms of the today’s café. Jeremias Stüer, one of the three founders, says that the name 21 gramm comes from the Hollywood film of the same name, which deals with death and the weighting of our soul. Conclusion of the film: Our soul weighs 21 grams.
After long, complicated renovation work, a beautiful, light-flooded room stands, which does not hide its history. Along the walls delicate shades of pink and yellow appear, next to them pale green tones and plants that entwine around the lamps. Bible texts decorate the walls and richly decorated columns support the vaulted ceiling.
Jeremiah and his co-founders serve speciality coffee and hearty dishes such as tarte flambée on tin, and sinful desserts, a dream.
