The market Ameya-Yokochō stretches from Ueno station with numerous side streets to Okachimachi station. One shop follows another, from clothes and leather goods to sweets, gifts, electronics, stalls with spices and all kinds of undefinable fresh fruit, vegetables, dried and fresh meat and in between countless small restaurants, sushi bars, tea shops and shops for foot massages. A visit to the market can be perfectly combined with a visit to Ueno Park. But of course it is most beautiful – as in all markets – in the morning hours, when the Ueno quarter slowly comes to life, the merchants roar through the narrow streets with their mopeds and the lanterns made of rice paper swing gently in the wind over the windows.
