Blue Bottle Coffee has long been a fixture on the specialty coffee scene – including in New York. Originally founded in California, the coffee shop takes its name from Vienna’s first coffee house culture: in the 17th century, an escaped Polish officer is said to have opened a coffee house called Zur blauen Flasche after the siege of Vienna – one of the first of its kind in Europe. And it was precisely this image that inspired founder James Freeman to give the place its name. Today, people meet in Tribeca for a cappuccino, cardamom cookie and a bit of Viennese coffee house spirit in a New York guise.
