The airy, light-suffused Café Restaurant Amsterdam is a local favourite in the Westerpark area. The former pump station was used to transport water from the dunes to the city between 1900 and the mid-nineties. Since 1996, the carefully renovated historic halls have enjoyed a new life as a charming neighbourhood meeting place; creatives who have their studios in the area arrange to lunch here, and on weekends the crowds are mixed, including families. Bathed in industrial-chic ambience, guests sit at simple wooden tables with white tablecloths; meanwhile one of the historic diesel motors at the rear of the room recalls the roots of the place. As a traveller one is well served here: there’s always space and the kitchen offers a continuous service. The menu is Dutch/French with well-loved classics like the Old Amsterdamer Sandwich, Croquettes, Herring, and Rib-Eye with Bernaise. Fans of Sticky Toffee should on all accounts leave room for dessert!
