The imposing Castelvecchio, the Skaliger fortress, did not bring luck to its builders, but today it is a stroke of luck for Verona and the museum architecture. Originally, the Skaliger probably had the Castelvecchio built to protect themselves from their own people, who had to live with disproportionately high taxes. Their great time was coming to an end – and only a few years after their completion, the Visconti of Milan, supported by many citizens of Verona, occupied the fortress.
In 1923 the Castelvecchio, which had been rather battered over time, was extensively converted into an art museum, the Civico Museo d’Arte, based on the existing collections. The collections are considerable and strongly focused on the great artists of Verona. Sculptures and paintings from the heyday of the Scaliger, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
