Unsuspecting, you might roar along the Pacific Coast Highway between Santa Monica and Malibu straight past it: the legendary house of likewise legendary designer-pair Charles (1907-78) and Ray (1912-88) Eames. It’s one of 36 model houses that were drafted by the country modernists. Simple, affordable housing was in demand after the second world war and the Eames’s answered with two square, light-suffused structures with a wonderful view over the Pacific, situated on a slope in the Pacific Palisades. The architectural tones in which the living and working spaces are arranged across the two houses pleased the Eames’s so much that they moved in themselves. The house has been maintained with original furniture until this day, and visitors can walk through the garden with its enormous eucalypts. The houses themselves are off-limits, but you can take a good peep through the windows. Visits must be booked in advance. Once you arrive you will be given information about the houses and can walk through on your own.
