Karls in Mittenwald emerged from the former Berndl bakery, and it’s clear that Anne-Sophie and Dario didn’t simply open a café here, but created something the place had been missing. Downstairs: coffee, cake, and a long communal table where guests, locals, and passersby naturally come together. Upstairs: three apartments—Resi, Franzl, and Irmi. Calmly designed, somewhere between Scandinavian clarity and Alpine warmth. Books, ceramics, textiles, and small artworks on the walls. Nothing too much, nothing too little. The Karwendel mountains begin practically at the doorstep, and Mittenwald lies just over ninety minutes south of Munich. Anyone returning from a hike in the afternoon and sitting down on the small bench in front of the house will quickly understand why people end up staying longer than planned. A perfect short-trip hideaway.
