Smack bang in the center of the newly developed Meatpacking District, the Fiskebar entirely pulls off its unique mix of Manhattan edge and Mediterranean flair. Post-industrial, tiled walls splashed artfully with light provide the backdrop to diners ordering seemingly endless small seafood creations, either at simple, dark-wood tables or the imposing central bar. With dishes composed according to each morning’s offering at the fish markets, the menu couldn’t be more produce-driven, and that’s just how we like it! Among many more esoteric and unusual menu items, one Fiskebar classic has to be the tongue-in-cheek Fish & Chips, arriving rolled in stripy “newspaper” and accompanied by an out-of-this-world remoulade. Equally impressive are the fresh oysters from the region, and any of the various fish on offer, simply cooked and elegantly garnished. International visitors must also be sure to order a glass of Denmark’s first homegrown wine: the Arwen 2008, Sauvignon Blanc, is produced by Fiskebar’s own Anders Elmer on nearby Lilleø island. Despite sporting modern looks, a hot location and a good-looking clientele, Fiskebar doesn’t show any interest in simply riding on its hip factor, and intends instead to be producing outstanding food for a long time to come. In his own words, Anders envisions “a restaurant that is around for many years and serves very good food in a totally unique atmosphere”. Those who don’t eat seafood are also catered for by an ample selection of meat and vegetarian dishes.
