It is tiny, very comfortable, and situated in one of the oldest building in the district. A former bar with low ceilings and ancient windows, almost like in Alsace, but in the middle of St. Pauli. Xxx, who used to be in advertising, walked past it one day and didn’t hesitate. He wanted to change, get away from advertising, and wanted to give his passion for good wine and catering a place of its own, where guests can be treated as though they were at home. His wife, xxx, who has her roots in gastronomy, organises everything behind the scenes. His patrons, nay his friends, are a loyal and likeable group who make the atmosphere casual and lively. Behind the bar are two cheerful barkeepers who twirl about and distribute the ever-changing dishes from the big black menu amongst the closely arranged tables. The cuisine, modernly international yet at times very Swabian, compliments the the wines from promising small vintners, all of whom are friends of the owner. Classics such as a whole roasted seabream or goats’ cheese with salad are served, but also pork raost with pears, beans, and bacon or sausage salad. It’s an unusual place for Hamburg with a lot of heart and a great feel for the season.
