It’s hard to believe what’s hiding in Vienna’s underground. The crypt is visible from the outside. Bar modest, the only clue is the engraved sign at the cellar entrance of a Viennese apartment building in the ninth district. With people ringing the bell, an attractive woman welcomes us and immediately takes off her jackets. She leads us to a dimly lit staircase. On the lower floor there is a vaulted hall, in the middle of which a long bar plays the leading role. Behind it are probably the best bar keepers in town. On the menu are two handfuls of drinks like you have never read before. Admission is from 6 pm. At later hours a DJ plays and turns the bar into a club. After a drink you forget that you are actually in a tranquil residential area of Vienna. It’s as if the descent into the underground takes you straight to New York, Beirut or East London.
