The Kunsthaus Bregenz, designed by Peter Zumthor, is a real experience – beyond the exhibitions that can be seen there. Centrally located in Bregenz, near the shore of Lake Constance, this mighty glass cube appears unspectacular at first glance: joined squares, some stairs can be seen from the outside, but even the entrance fits into this overall concept in such a way that you have to look closely. And this impression also runs through the interior of the Kunsthaus Bregenz: polished concrete on walls and partly on the floor, long flights of stairs and wide rooms. The fascinating thing is that the rooms that are created in this way are monumental, but still recede into the background and put art in the foreground. There is little art hanging in the individual exhibition rooms – and that is a good thing. There are individual benches on which you can let everything have an effect on you. The rooms then recede into the background and serve only as frames. But if you get involved with the space, you can perceive it as a great experience. The light comes through light shafts and consists to a large part of daylight, the artificial light sources are hidden and so the rooms are simply pleasantly bright, in a very fascinating way – we were really enthusiastic! The administration and above all the KUB Restaurant – also designed by Peter Zumthor – are located in the building in front of the building. There is currently a Vietnamese restaurant there.
