Manuela is a place like no other. In the middle of SoHo, on the corner of Prince and Wooster Street, behind a bright yellow curtain hides a restaurant that combines art and cuisine in a fascinating way. As soon as you enter, you are greeted by a colorful, anemone-like sculpture by Mika Rottenberg above the bar – and that’s just the beginning. Cindy Sherman, Louise Bourgeois, George Condo: in Manuela, world-class art hangs on the walls, on the table and sometimes even above you. The interior is lively, but never intrusive – a bit like a very well curated artist’s household. The colorful tables are by Mary Heilmann, the serpentine chairs by Matthew Day Jackson. Behind Manuela is Artfarm, the hospitality project by Manuela and Iwan Wirth. On the plates: seasonal, sustainable, surprising. Roasted pumpkin with stracciatella, monkfish skewer with guindilla chilies or the fluffy cream biscuits, a Manuela classic. And as if all that wasn’t enough, there is also “The Rocket” in the back room – an in-house composting facility whose yield fertilizes the urban gardens of Project EATS in New York.
