Mario Talarico is 87 years old and a master of an almost extinct art. He is an umbrella maker and the 4th generation to run his business in sun-drenched Naples. Tucked away in a typically disreputable Neapolitan alley in the Quartieri Spagnoli, Talarico is one of the best umbrella makers in Europe. On a few square metres full of umbrellas, fabrics and knobs, Mario conjures up three handmade umbrella models a day. And he does it by hand, of course, which takes about four hours per umbrella. The jewels range in price from 80 to 600 euros. Each umbrella is absolutely unique. Even those who don’t buy an umbrella should stop by Mario Talarico’s, because it is simply unique.
