In the sixties McDaids was a focal point of Dublin’s bohemian scene. Brendan Behan, well-known in Ireland as an author and drinker, would meet here with his friends, the “angry-young-men”. In fact McDaids has remained a meeting point for authors and literati since 1779. Today tourists mix with an intellectual local crowd. In summer they sit out front in big groups and enjoy their dark, malty Guinness. During the rest of the year the bookshelves and dimly-lit alcoves give them a place to discuss, spin yarns and let their thoughts wander over a pint, undisturbed by the modern city chaos.
