The Mercado Bolhao is definitely a highlight. Here life rages and has been since the 19th century. It’s especially nice and lively here on Friday and Saturday mornings – when the locals do their shopping for the weekend. Under the beautiful wrought-iron roof, there is everything from fruit to vegetables, cheese, bread, meat and fresh fish, everything the culinary heart desires. If you can’t resist on the spot, look out for the snack stands in the middle of the market. And anyway, there are all kinds of nice boutiques around the outside to browse. Our absolute favourite shop is A Pérola Do Bolhão at Rua Formosa 277 – here you can find wonderful delicacies and antique interiors, an absolute paradise for browsing.
