Designed by Wilhelm Dahlerup and opened in 1897, the Glyptotek accommodates the largest collection of antiques in Northern Europe with over 10,000 pieces. The current body of works has grown around an impressive starting point: in 1888, brewer, passionate art collector and philanthropist Carl Jacobsen donated his renowned personal collections to the Danish state. Following a visit to the world expo in Paris, the Jacobsens laid the foundations here for the largest collection of French expressionism outside of France. Since 1996 an additional modern wing displays works by Gauguin, Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec and Emile Bernard. The Museum café is located in a lush courtyard topped with a spectacular glass cupola, and offers an atmospheric lunch amidst the sculptures.
