The Upper East Side is home to a number of upscale omakase eateries, but they usually don’t offer a truly relaxed atmosphere or high prices. Apart from the good price-performance ratio, Tanoshi is pure authenticity and plays on the highest culinary level. If it weren’t for the occasional American siren whizzing by outside the door, you’d think you were sitting in a small alley in Tokyo. The room is cramped, small and a little outdated, but the omakase served here is simply on point. A small starter and 10 pieces of nigri, tuna maki and a spicy salmon hand roll. There are large posters on the wall with additional dishes – here we suggest you order at least one of them. If there’s shad or the lightly burnt blackthroat fish, by all means try it. Tanoshi is a unique, wonderful and quirky little institution in New York! For an omakase menu at Tanoshi, you pay around $120 for dinner and around $60 for lunch.
