Knishes and other eastern European specialities have been available on the Lower East Side since 1910, and it is clear that not much has changed here for decades. The Knish, a traditional Yiddish snack food, is a fried or baked, dough-covered dumpling made with various fillings. Classics include potato, buckwheat groats, cabbage, ground meat and cheese. Anyone who finds the savoury variety a little heavy should try the sweeter versions. These come filled either with quark or marmalade; the latter considerable more sugary than the former.
