Café Dede’s menu includes only five dishes and drinks. We can no longer imagine a world where the word “brunch” is not part of our vocabulary, but just under a decade ago things were different. After 18 years as a chef, Agnes Costa left Lisbon and travelled the world for eight years. When he arrived in Australia, he discovered the wonderful world of brunch. Back in Lisbon, his café Dede’s was born. A tiny place in Lapa that serves brunch at any time of day. There’s avocado toast, but here it’s served with feta cheese, coriander, mint, ginger and pickled red onion on gleba bread; there are scrambled eggs, but with leeks, mushrooms and Parmesan cheese. The menu will grow over time, but not too much, seven dishes at most, because Agnes wants to maintain quality and seasonality. He works with a grocer in Lapa and goes there every morning to pick up whatever is available. If there are no avocados, the avo toast is taken off the menu that day. We like!
