The Eishof in the Pfossental valley in South Tyrol is one of those places where even the journey there is an experience in itself. At an altitude of 2,076 metres, in the heart of the Texel Group Nature Park, this old mountain farm lies in a wide high valley, surrounded by alpine meadows, steep mountain slopes and a magnificent backdrop of three-thousand-metre peaks. Today, Uli and her team run the Eishof with plenty of personality and fresh ideas. In the kitchen, Simone ensures that South Tyrolean classics are given a unique twist. The food is prepared using produce from small local farmers and producers, ranging from alpine cheese from the Pfossental valley to vegetables from the Etschtal valley. Dumplings, bacon and Kaiserschmarren are naturally on the menu, but the menu also changes with the seasons. From Vorderkaser, it’s about an hour and a half’s walk along an easily accessible path through the open mountain landscape, past alpine pastures and grazing cows. At the top, a sunny terrace awaits, where you can sit and enjoy the sweeping views of the valley. If you’d like to stay longer, you can even spend the night and start the next morning with a breakfast of fresh milk, alpine cheese and home-baked bread. A truly wonderful spot for anyone who loves South Tyrol in its unspoilt form, but also appreciates it when someone brings a breath of fresh air to an old mountain hut with new ideas and plenty of enthusiasm.
