The northernmost example of southern German and Bohemian Baroque in Germany is Neuzelle, only a few kilometres away from the Polish border. The Neuzelle monastery was founded in 1268, well before the Baroque era, but it was severely damaged during the Thirty Years’ War. As part of its reconstruction, Italian artists decorated it with frescoes and stuccoes. After the fall of communism, the Neuzelle monastery was founded with the task of restoring the former monastery complex and making it accessible to the public. The monastery complex comprises the collegiate church of St. Mary, the parish church of the Holy Cross, the cloister with monastery museum and the monastery garden. This makes it one of the few completely preserved monasteries in Germany. Especially the monastery garden with its steeply sloping terraces, the orangery, the baroque paths and water facilities and a partly historical plant stock is worth a visit.
