If you’re strolling along Curtain Road in Shoreditch, you should definitely stop for lunch or dinner at Manteca. Opposite the American Carwash, on the corner of a Victorian brick building, hangs a sign in the shape of a pig’s head. If that looks a bit like a butcher’s shop, that’s because Manteca is one. It’s a culinary superduo consisting of Smokestak founder David Carter and former Kitty Fisher’s chef Chris Leach. The former brings his knowledge of butchery, while the latter has travelled through Italy learning the fine art of fresh pasta. And these two skills complement each other very well. Together they first opened a pop-up and now finally have their own permanent restaurant in Shoreditch. On the menu, you’ll find one delicacy after another: Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe with brown crab and steamed mussels, soft flatbreads with clams, small bundles of casoncelli pasta with crispy pancetta and sage, rich 70-day aged txuleta steaks or ribbon-like fazzoletti pasta with duck ragu. A gourmand’s paradise!
