One of the city’s famous sons, even though he was born in Freiburg and later moved to Paris, is Jean Tinguely (1925-1991). He grew up in Basel, went to school and vocational school there where he received his training as a decorator. The majority of his work is on exhibition in Basel: kinetic sculptures that seem to lead a buzzing, rattling and creaking life, that are cheerful, playful, melancholic, ironic and abysmal and lead a loud conversation with visitors. Many of the pieces were a present by Tinguely’s widow Niki de Saint Phalle for the museum’s inauguration. On display are drawings, documents and photography as well as frequent exhibitions of other kinetic artists. The architecture of the museum is as spectacular as its exhibits. Mario Botta designed a curvy building flooded with light and constructed with radiant pink stone. It is nestled in the hillside and located directly at the riverside at Solitude Park.
